How do portable toilets work?

A common question we get asked is: how do portable toilets actually work?

Most portable toilets require no mains drainage or water supply. Bunkabin toilets are self-contained, meaning waste is carried into a holding tank beneath the toilet rather than being flushed into the sewage system.

After use of the toilet the process is as follows

  1. Lever is pressed on the pump flush
  2. Waste is drawn into the holding tank
  3. Chemicals are mixed with water to kill germs, prevent odours, and break down the waste

What happens to the waste?

Once the flushing process has started the pump-flush creates a pressure system that circulates the water and chemical mixture around the toilet and then the waste is deposited in the holding tank for the duration of the hire.

It is important that portable toilets are serviced regularly, one of the main features of a portable toilet is the waste holding tank. Waste holding tank storage is limited, the toilet must therefore be serviced and emptied at regular intervals. The frequency of the servicing will be dependent on how often the portable toilet gets used.
