Static caravans have long been used to house seasonal farm workers. They are familiar, widely available and can look like an affordable way to add several beds close to the farm.

However, buying caravans also means taking responsibility for their delivery, condition, maintenance and eventual resale or disposal. The number of workers you need to accommodate may change from one season to the next, but the caravans remain your responsibility whether they are full, partly occupied or standing empty.

There are several alternatives to static caravans for farm workers, from existing farm properties and private rentals to permanent modular buildings. For many agricultural businesses, however, hired sleeper units offer the most straightforward balance of comfort, flexibility and control.

Using a self-contained property also creates tenancy or agricultural occupancy rights that continue after the worker’s employment ends. The position will depend on the property, the worker and the agreement in place, so you should always take legal advice before relying on tied housing as a flexible seasonal option.

RENTING PRIVATE ACCOMMODATION

Private houses, flats or rooms may suit permanent staff or smaller groups where enough property is available nearby.

Hotel rooms also give workers limited space to cook, store food or settle in for a longer stay. Farms may need to provide transport at the beginning and end of every shift, which adds further cost and coordination.

For a genuine emergency, hotels may be useful. For a full growing or harvest season, they rarely provide the most efficient arrangement.

CONVERTING SHIPPING CONTAINERS

Shipping containers are sometimes presented as an affordable and secure alternative.

A basic container is not suitable accommodation, however. It needs substantial work to create proper sleeping space, including insulation, ventilation, heating, windows, doors, plumbing and electrical services.
